Went to [AEF General Headquarters at] Chaumont with [Edwin] James [New York Times]. Arranged to go
tomorrow to real battlefront.
The ‘real battlefront’ referred to the big German attack
that had begun. The Germans had chosen to attack the line from Soissons to
Rheims. Their big advance was shown in this map from the June 1, 1918, New York
Herald.
