correspondent. He had been in Europe over four months, and in France for eight
weeks.

Went with [Edwin] James [New York Times] to the aviation field near Toul: saw some of the
American fliers who are now organized as the Squadron of the Hat in the Ring.
James unpleasant to be around with.
Got
word today that I have been properly accredited.
Moved into a room at 32 Rue St. Jean [Neufchateau].
Quiet in Picardy. Germans evidently
preparing to launch another big defensive.
Weather pleasant – some
sunshine.
