Don
Martin diary entry for Friday, January 4, 1918:
After
breakfast at Savoy went to Fleet St. office and read the papers. At 3:45 met
Baird at the hotel and went with him to the war office to have talk with Gen. [John] Buchan,
mouthpiece for foreign office [Director of Information].
Reporters meet there once a week. Had dinner at Simpson’s. Went to Fleet St. at
night. Took Champion around to the Cheshire Cheese and bought him a drink. I
was much interested in the famous place which figured so prominently in the
life of Dr. [Samuel] Johnson [1709-1784] whose
biography I have read in such detail. Went to bed about 1 a.m.
Weather
fairly good.
