Don Martin diary entry for Tuesday, January 22, 1918: Had
luncheon (breakfast) with Louis Nethersole [director
of Lyric theater] at an Italian restaurant on Dean St. Then met Charlie Weaver at
Savoy. Went to Fleet St office with him; showed him the Cheshire Cheese and
Temple Court and walked to War Office with him in the rain. Saw Sutherland at
10 Downing St. (Lloyd George’s Secretary) but not able to get interview. Took a
Mr. Brownell to Lyric Theatre to see Doris Keane in “Romance”. It is the big hit
of London but I can’t see much art in it. After show went to Miss Keane’s
dressing room and had interview with her. She is no wonder. She invited me to
her home for luncheon Thursday.
["Romance" by Edward Sheldon, opened
in New York in February 1913. It transferred to London in October 1915
where it ran for 1,049 performances.]
