Don Martin diary entry for Sunday, January 13, 1918:
$60 6 pounds 14 S.
$60 6 pounds 14 S.
Began day with walk to Leicester Sq. with Russell. Went with him as far as Hanover Gate apartments. Left him and walked about 2 miles back to Oxford Circus where I took the subway to Whitechapel. Just wandered around to see region I had always heard about. Looks nothing like N.Y.’s Ghetto. Returned to hotel. Wrote story of London’s comforts and fortitude and also “Sidelights on the War,” for N.Y. edition. Some flub-dub for Paris. Went to Fleet St. and gossiped with Champion till midnight. Sent letter to Mr. Bennett telling what I think ought to be done here for the Herald. Imagine he will take exception to nearly all I suggest.
Really a fine day.
