Don Martin diary entry for Wednesday,
March 6, 1918:
Went to Burberry’s
this forenoon and tried on my uniform. Some of the old timers may outshine me
in brains and experience but certainly not in clothes. Hope I get a chance to wear
them. The breeches, tunic and outer coat cost $115. Have heard nothing from Bennett
further. Now, in conformity to my custom, I am worrying lest the thing fall
through. Spent part of the afternoon at the office, and most of the evening.
Being good and hungry, I got a big dinner at the Savoy – fish, steak, pancake
with jelly etc. - cost 2.50 but was worth it. Also got my hair cut. Doesn’t
take long to cut it now – there isn’t enough left.
Weather ideal – mild +
sunshine.
Don Martin's clothing bill of $115 is equivalent to $2,024 today, using the Consumer Price Index ratio of 17.6. His dinner bill at the Savoy of $2.50 is equivalent to $44 today.
