Don Martin diary entry for Tuesday, April 9, 1918:
Spent the day in Paris. Met [Burn] Price in
afternoon and went around to various offices to arrange for sending of cables
to N.Y., if I go with the 1st division which I probably will.
Commodore [Bennett] wired to use my own judgment, but he said he thought it inadvisable
to detach myself from the main army. Commodore is wrong this time so I shall go
with the 1st division if it can be fixed up. Met [Henri] Bazin [Philadelphia Public Ledger] and went to [Naboth] Hedin’s (Brooklyn Eagle correspondent) office. Bazin, I find is very much of a
four flusher. He sees the whole but not the doughnut. Hedin is a live one. Had
dinner alone at Chatham Grill. The outfit there knows me now and I get the best
there is.
Weather not pleasant.

This entry shows that Commodore Bennett was continuing to run his show on a daily basis despite his illness. Don Martin expresses his resistance to being ordered from afar, but will end up doing what the Commodore thinks best.
