Don
Martin diary entry for Saturday, April 6, 1918:
Getting very tired of [Edwin] James [New York Times]. Bright enough kid but not house-broken.
Went with him to Toul, Boucq and other places, stopping at Sebastopool to see
young Archie Roosevelt who refuses to talk to the newspapers. Got good story at
Boucq of two Germans captured by Americans. Wrote story about it for New York and
Paris. Learned from Colonel of Air Corps that not a single American airship is
in France ready for operation.
No word from [Commodore] Bennett. Wired him yesterday I
would not go with 1st Division till I hear from him. Most of the
other men are going with the division but I shall not go till I get definite word
from Bennett. Got letter from Dorothy saying
they received my cable [sent from London] saying I was going to France.
Germans making continued slight advances on
new line in Picardy.
