Don Martin diary entry for Thursday,
February 21, 1918:
Had a very
busy day. Attended Repington and Gwynne hearing at Bow St. for violation of
Defence of Realm Act. Were convicted and fined 100 pounds each. Then to office.
Wrote quite a bit of stuff. Got a very funny letter from Dorothy. Saw Gwynne,
editor of the Post at 6:30. Got an interview with him on the hearing, etc. and
called it to Paris and New York. Got dinner at Simpson’s late. To the office
again. Mr. Sproul came in and gave me another good interview on Russia. He says
“Who wins Russia wins war.” Mailed 1-1/2 columns to Paris. Left the office at 12
and sat in Russell’s room at the hotel till 1:30 a.m.
Wore for the first time new check suit, I
had it made at Gillets. Fits but is certainly a loud one. Think I am a bit
ashamed of it. Gave little Jo, the office boy, an old suit which is good as
new.
Weather clear but cool.
