Don Martin diary entry
for Sunday, February 10, 1918:
Went for a long walk by myself – across Westminster Bridge; then
around by Buckingham Palace and to the Savoy.

Went to the office at 4 p.m. and wrote several stories – about the
speculation regarding end of the war, etc. Had dinner at Simpson’s and then
went to the office again. Wrote a short letter to Dorothy. Am beginning to
realize how much Dorothy means to me.
Eating in London is getting rather monotonous. Not much meat,
little butter, practically no sugar and no fruit except at high prices. Think I
must have lost 7 or 8 pounds.
Weather
delightful
Don Martin’s short letter to Dorothy commented
on her letters. Here is a taste of that.
Dorothy:
You are a funny girl. Those pictures in your
letter No. 5 -- dated Jan. 19 – were very good... I suppose the censors have to
laugh at your letters if they have any time at all for laughter. They certainly
make me laugh.

Posted
articles by Don Martin which would have been written about this date were not
found in the Sunday, February 24, edition of the New York Herald, whereas there
were multiple posted articles in the Sunday editions before and after that date.
This suggests that articles mentioned in his diary entries did not make it New
York - possibly they went down with a sunken ship.
