Don Martin diary entry for Friday,
June 21, 1918:
Went to Baccarat,
Comtoil where the 77th division is in camp preparing to go to the
front line around Baccarat to relieve the 42. Part of it went in line Wednesday
night. 77th is first draft division. Has everything in it from
millionaires to oyster dredgers and barkeepers. Is from New York and Long
Island. Returned 6 p.m. Martin Green [New York Evening World] and [Edwin] James [New York Times] were with me. Green has bad cold.
James has one and I have bad throat. Can hardly make myself heard.
