October 10, 1918: Tributes from Charles Hughes, Charles Whitman and Alfred Smith

Further tributes to Don Martin came from eminent men to the New York Herald and were published.
The Honorable Charles E. Hughes, when informed of the death of Don Martin, wrote the following:
"I am deeply saddened to learn of Don Martin's death. I had known him for many years. He was a man of rare personal charm, thoroughly equipped for his work and represented his profession at its best. His articles from the front have been among the very best. No one who ever knew him that didn't love him, and his death leaves a deep sense of personal loss."

New York Governor Charles S. Whitman wrote:
"I am shocked to learn of Don Martin's death. All who really knew him trusted and honored him. I share the grief of his hosts of friends."

Alfred E. Smith, Democratic nominee for Governor, paid him this tribute:

"I deeply regret receiving the news of the death of Don Martin. His end is not only a loss to our city but to the state and country. His valuable services will be remembered by all citizens who read the truth from his brilliant pen."
